Maclear Disadvantages: 5 Beginner Mistakes That Cost You Money

Maclear disadvantages: 5 beginner mistakes that cost returns (concentration, wasted bonuses, ignored LTV, idle cash, no exit plan) plus the platform's own cons.

Updated: 4.9.2026
Title graphic reading 5 beginner mistakes with Maclear that cost you returns, with the Maclear logo and a warning triangle on a teal background

Maclear advertises 14 to 16% a year, and five beginner mistakes cost you a measurable part of that return if the loans perform: concentrating on one platform or one project, wasting the bonus stack on partial €500 blocks, ignoring rating and LTV, letting cash sit idle before a project is funded, and treating a P2P platform like a savings account. We also list the disadvantages of Maclear itself, from the negative equity in 2024 to the missing ECSP passport.

Maclear disadvantages at a glance

Maclear lists its projects at 14 to 16% a year (the homepage headline says up to 15.6%), pays interest monthly and backs every loan with collateral. The disadvantages sit one layer below: roughly three years of operating history, a Swiss domicile outside the EU passport system, and bonus rules with enough small print that beginners leave money on the table.

Part one covers five mistakes we see beginners make, part two the disadvantages of the platform itself, with Maclear's own explanation next to each. The full picture is in our Maclear review, the practical checklist in 10 things to know.

The honest risks in our video

If you only have two minutes, jump to 07:20, where we list the risks that remain after all four security layers.

Mistake 1: Putting too much into one platform or one project

Maclear primary market with 8 open projects, including ULTIMA FINANCE (Bulgaria, rating A, 15.2%, 9 months, 89% funded) and two Czech BBB projects at 14.9% and 14.8%

The concentration mistake happens at two levels, and beginners usually make both at once.

Platform level. Maclear AG was founded in 2020 according to its FAQ, but the first project was funded in 2023, so the operating history is about three years. In that time the platform has funded 1,967 projects (July 2026 investor update) with one default and zero late loans. A clean record, and a young one without a full credit cycle. A rule of thumb often quoted in the P2P community is to keep P2P at no more than 5 to 10% of a portfolio and a single young platform at 1 to 2%. Your emergency fund never belongs in P2P.

Project level. Maclear's July 2026 investor update shows how concentration creeps in. One project, ULTIMA FINANCE, took €5,004,826 that month, 36.24% of everything invested on the platform in July, and the screenshot above shows the same borrower open again on the primary market. With a €50 minimum per project, €1,000 spreads across 20 projects. That does not remove the risk of a total loss on a single loan, but it caps what one loss does to your account.

Mistake 2: Wasting the bonus stack

Maclear 3%+3% referral programme page: the inviting investor receives a 3% referral bonus and the invited friend receives a 3% cashback bonus on every investment made in the first 90 days after registration, with a worked example of €300 each on a €10,000 investment

This mistake costs money on day one. Maclear runs three one-off bonuses for new investors, each with a condition beginners trip over.

The €15 welcome bonus needs a first investment of at least €50 within 7 days of registration (not of KYC completion), primary market only, and arrives as a bonus position in the same project, not as cash. The €30 per €500 bonus counts the full amount you invest in one project, rounded down to complete €500 blocks, and pays €30 per block, capped at €300 per project below Platinum, the top leaderboard league. Every further project is calculated independently. The 3% cashback requires registration via a referral link or code, covers primary-market investments of €50 or more in the first 90 days from registration, and is paid as cash once the project reaches Funded. Any referral link unlocks it, because the cashback is the new-user side of Maclear's own 3+3 programme and not a FinanceArena exclusive. Without a link there is no cashback.

Five ways to waste it:

  • •Partial blocks. €490 in a project pays nothing, and €999 pays exactly one €30 credit. Maclear's help centre: "The bonus is not applied to partial blocks. An investment of €999 receives the same bonus as €500."
  • •Registering without a referral link. The connection is created at registration and cannot be added later.
  • •Missing the 7-day window because KYC and the proof-of-address check still have to clear before a first investment is possible.
  • •Buying on the secondary market. None of the three bonuses apply there.
  • •Reserving late in the 90 days. Cashback is measured by the Funded date, not the reservation date.

Done properly: €500 in one project as your first investment gives €30 + €15 cashback + €15 welcome = €60. €1,000 gives €105, €2,500 gives €240, two projects of €5,000 each give €915. One-off amounts, not annual return, and the €15 and €30 positions stay locked until the project repays.

3% + €15 + €30 per €500

Register via the link, invest €50 or more within 7 days, keep each project's total on a full €500 block, and stay on the primary market for the first 90 days

Activate the bonus stack

Those numbers pull against mistake 1, so here is the conflict in plain arithmetic. A block bonus needs €500 in a project, so 20 projects with a block bonus in each of them is €10,000. With €1,000 you can hold 20 positions of €50 and collect nothing in block bonuses, or two positions of €500 and collect €60. A single €500 loss is larger than that €60, which makes the block the smaller of the two questions at that account size. The complete rulebook is in our Maclear bonus guide.

Mistake 3: Ignoring the rating and the LTV

Maclear risk scoring panel on a project page: total risk score A, debt to equity 4.06, LTV 98%, credit history 9 out of 10

Maclear rates every borrower on a ten-grade scale from AAA to D, weighted across financial risk, qualitative risk, and coverage and liquidity, updated quarterly. The beginner error is to read only the interest column: at the time of writing, WOW Innovation (Germany, BBB) paid 16% while SESINF (Italy, A) paid 14.5%. The gap is 1.5 points a year. A default can cost 100.

The second number matters more than the letter. LTV is the loan amount divided by the collateral value, and you find it on every project page, in the risk-scoring block right next to the rating letter. Maclear publishes its own risk bands: 40 to 80% low, 80 to 120% moderate, 120 to 160% elevated, and 160 to 200% high risk, where enforcement "may not fully cover principal if asset values decline". "Every loan is secured" says nothing about how far the security reaches.

The screenshot above is from a project page in our own account: total risk score A and an LTV of 98%. An A rating and collateral that only just covers the loan sit side by side, and collateral can also mean a personal guarantee from the owner, worth exactly as much as the person behind it. Maclear rates the borrower, decides on the listing and earns a 3 to 6% commission per listed project. The grade is Maclear's own.

Mistake 4: Letting cash sit idle

Maclear deposit screen in our own account with the instant deposit button and the bank transfer notice: SEPA transactions only, minimum amount €50, EUR only, no deposit fees, standard SEPA transfers arriving within 1 to 2 working days

Interest starts when the project moves to Funded, which Maclear puts at "up to 10 business days after you confirm your investment". Reserved funds and money in your available balance earn nothing. On €1,000 at 15% that is about €0.41 a day, so ten days in Reserved status cost roughly €4 per project.

The bigger leak is on the way out: repaid capital lands in your available balance and waits for you, and borrowers can repay early at any time (Maclear then pays a minimum of three months of interest), so money comes back when you do not expect it.

The idle period can be shortened from both ends. On the way in, an ordinary SEPA transfer takes 1 to 2 working days according to the deposit screen above, while SEPA Instant deposits via your personal virtual IBAN typically arrive within minutes after a one-time activation and cost nothing. Maclear checks every incoming payment against your own name and your deposit reference for anti-money-laundering reasons, so a payment sent from someone else's account or without that reference goes to manual processing instead of landing in your balance in minutes. That is the difference between funding an order while a project is open and parking money on the platform in advance. On the way out, AutoInvest handles the reinvesting with up to 10 strategies filtered by interest range, term, risk level, country and project type, and it is served before manual investors when a project opens. It needs a signed Form A, executed orders cannot be cancelled, and it qualifies for every bonus.

Mistake 5: Treating Maclear like a savings account

Maclear secondary market in our own account: 1,239 positions on offer, ITALBRASS and INTECHNA loan parts of €500 listed at €491 with a 1.8% discount, remaining terms of 11 to 14 months and a Buy button per row

Maclear is not a bank, no deposit guarantee scheme applies, and a total loss on a project is possible. That is why the exit route matters.

The exit route is the secondary market. You can list a funded position at par or at a discount of up to 50%, never above your original amount. The seller pays 2.5%, the buyer nothing, the minimum is €30, and unsold listings expire after 14 days. The screenshot above is from our own account: 1,239 positions on offer, €500 loan parts among them priced at €491. Maclear reports a median of about three hours from listing to sale across 45,530 sold listings in the six months to 11 May 2026, and says 97% of listings clear within seven days. Those are figures from a growth phase, and Maclear adds that it "does not guarantee that a listed position will sell".

Three costs beginners miss. Interest accrued but not yet paid "transfers to the buyer as part of the claim", so selling two days before a payment date hands that month's interest to someone else. Bonus positions from the €15 and €30 programmes cannot be listed at all. And a position in a project in default or enforcement cannot be listed. The secondary market works exactly as long as you do not urgently need it.

Your emergency fund belongs in an instant-access savings account at a regulated bank covered by a deposit guarantee scheme. How Maclear handles an actual default is in Is Maclear safe?.

Disadvantages of the platform itself

Maclear complete fee table from the help centre: €0 for SEPA deposit, withdrawal, primary-market investment, AutoInvest and account maintenance, a secondary-market purchase at €0 for the buyer, and 2.5% of the transaction amount for a secondary-market sale, paid by the seller only

Critical reviews of Maclear circle around the same points. They are real, and Maclear has answered most of them in public.

Negative equity in 2024. The 2024 annual report, published on 3 June 2026, roughly 17 months after the balance-sheet date, shows a net loss of CHF 122,941 and equity of CHF -87,026, negative for the second year running. In the accompanying letter to investors, CFO and co-founder Aleksandr Lang names the number himself, calls it the cost of deliberate growth, points to an EBITDA of about -7,188, and expects equity to "return to positive territory" by the end of 2025. That expectation is not yet audited, and the 2025 annual report that would show whether it happened had not been published when we checked. The same letter states that in 2024 the platform paid investors CHF 827,849 in interest and bonuses while borrowers paid CHF 464,322 in interest, and Maclear writes that it covered that difference deliberately out of its own commission income. So the bonus stack in mistake 2 is subsidised from the platform's own funds rather than from loan income.

Swiss domicile, no ECSP passport. Maclear AG is a member of PolyReg, a self-regulatory organisation supervised by FINMA, which covers anti-money-laundering duties and regular independent audits by Grant Thornton AG. It is not a banking licence. Switzerland is a third country, so Maclear holds no ECSP licence and is not registered with any EU supervisor.

A provision fund that covers interest, not capital. The fund receives 2% of every successfully funded project, sits on a separate bank account, is audited by Grant Thornton AG, and covers interest from day 3 of a delay. Maclear's own blog post put the balance at €2 million in May 2026 on a page it last updated in July 2026, while the FAQ gives no figure and says the balance is published inside the platform and updated regularly. Maclear expects the coverage to extend to principal repayments as the fund grows; today it covers interest only. It is not insurance, it does not legally guarantee repayment, and it has never been activated, not even for the Vibroedil default.

Support and small print. Official support is an in-platform chatbot and email. Maclear states there is "no live chat with an agent", with weekend replies taking 24 to 48 hours. If the platform closes and Maclear cannot transfer your uninvested balance, you have 30 calendar days after its request to provide updated bank details or you forfeit the claim. On tax, Maclear deducts no Swiss withholding tax; you declare the interest in your country of residence, and the tax statement (Statements > Tax) lists cashback as its own line.

Conclusion: how to do it better

The allocation numbers from mistake 1 are a rule of thumb often quoted in the P2P community, not a recommendation from us: P2P at no more than 5 to 10% of a portfolio, and a single young platform at 1 to 2%. The rest of the list is mechanics rather than judgement. Each of the three one-off bonuses has its own condition: the €30 block needs €500 or more in the same project, the 3% cashback needs a registration through a referral link, and the €15 welcome bonus needs a first investment of €50 or more inside the 7-day window. The LTV sits next to the rating letter on every project page, and anything above 100% means the loan is larger than the security behind it. Money in your available balance earns nothing, which is what AutoInvest is there for. And a position in a project in default cannot be sold, which is why an emergency fund belongs in an instant-access savings account at a regulated bank covered by a deposit guarantee scheme.

Maclear has answered its critics in public, and the first default ended with full repayment. None of that changes the basic maths. You hold exposure to a young Swiss intermediary and to small European companies, and either can fail. Total loss of a position is possible. If you go ahead, the registration steps are in our sign-up guide.
